It’s cold—the plants in the greenhouse are thriving—their glossy leaves in stark contrast to the view beyond the glass
. Outside, brown and gray bare stems and drooping evergreen leaves are rimmed in ice. Have you ever wondered—what mechanisms make those outdoor plants survive beyond the greenhouse walls? And why is one plant designated a Zone 7 and another a Zone 3?

I checked out these questions and learned that one of the main factors for cold survival is how plants handle water. Then I called Ross Penhallagon, at the Oregon State University Extension Service office. He confirmed what I had discovered.

Ross told me that the first aspect of cold survival is acclimation. Plants do best when they get several weeks of exposure to near-freezing temperatures before a frost. This signals them to prepare.

Dry Strategies Work

One preparation method? Plants purposely put themselves in a state of desiccation. They remove excess water from their leaves—in the case of evergreens like rhododendrons and conifers—or from buds and stems. It’s similar to draining exposed pipes so that ice won’t expand and burst them. In plants, the forming ice plays havoc with unprotected cellular structures—why tomato vines are mush after a first frost.

But tougher vegetation evolved in colder climates has adapted. Some savvy plants move water from within their cells to between the cells, where there is more room for expansion. All excess water goes from the roots into the surrounding soil. What’s left behind has higher concentrations of sugars that act like antifreeze. Colder zone plants produce more of this antifreeze protection. Conifers have quite a bit. Greenhouse tropicals have none.

How Gardeners Can Help

When plants are in this self-induced dry state, protection from wind can be a plus. However, it’s common gardening advice to water plants well before a frost. Maybe that’s true in parts of the country where freezes are seldom expected—orange groves are watered overhead so forming ice protects the plants from lower than 32 degree temperatures. But unless the ground is bone dry, Ross confirmed for me that watering the soil before a frost may do more harm than good. After all, the plants are doing their best to get rid of water, right?

So when you’re in your cozy greenhouse, raise your watering can
in salute to those denizens beyond the glass that display nifty strategies to survive the cold.

As we step into the new year, celebrate the transition with an early dose of spring by “forcing” some winter branches or dormant bulbs. A sunny January day is the perfect time to head out, loppers in hand in search of branches for such projects. And stormy mid-winter weather is ideal for potting up quick-blooming bulbs indoors.

Quince, plum, forsythia, witchhazel, willow, apple or pear all make fine forcing subjects. Carefully select branches that have abundant flower buds. Don’t allow them to dry out—plunge into warm water within twenty minutes of cutting—a floral preservative can be added at this point. Change the water every few days, and store out of direct sunlight, ideally between 50 and 60?. Keep away from drafts and heating vents, maintaining cool, humid conditions; a large plastic bag or tarp is useful for this purpose. The closer to their normal bloom time, the more quickly the buds will open—it generally takes between one and four weeks. Arrange the branches as their buds begin to swell; once they’re open, move to a brighter spot to enjoy. Cooler temperatures will help them last.

Although tulips and daffodils require several cold months before they bloom, a few bulbs are quicker. Amaryllis and hyacinths are both ideal for forcing.

Plant amaryllis in a container 1-2” wider than the bulb’s diameter. Leave one-third to one-half of the bulb’s top above the soil. Place in a sunny and warm (55?) location. Keep moist, especially once flowering begins.

Hyacinths are often forced in specially designed glass containers. The bottom of the container is usually filled with water that reaches just to the bottom of the top “cup;” this holds the hyacinth bulb. Keep dark at 40-50?. Roots and shoots develop within 4-8 weeks, when the hyacinths can be moved to a sunny, warmer place.

After flowering, most bulbs are too depleted to bloom another season. If you can’t bear to throw them on the compost pile, cut off the flowers, and keep the leafy bulbs watered until they can be planted outside. After a season to recover in the ground, most hardy bulbs resume a normal life, blooming in sync with their non-forced brethren. But dig up tender bulbs– such as Amaryllis– before hard frosts and repot them indoors. With fresh soil and fertilizer
, Amaryllis usually bloom every winter– you’ll be amazed by the increased size of your bulb after it summers in the garden!

These “forced” glimpses of spring might just help you endure a few more dark and cold days of winter.

Growing herbs at home can be a great way to add freshness to the home and flavor to your cuisine. When you are just starting out and looking for an herbs guide, you will probably get all kinds of advice from friends and read conflicting information in magazines on what herbs you should grow from seed, what herbs you can buy already grown, and what herbs are acceptable dried.

Depending on whom you talk to, this advice will vary greatly and sometimes it can be baffling and confusing. I felt that way when I became interested in growing my own herbs a few years ago. I often searched for a beginner herbs guide to help me through the first steps. It was overwhelming trying to decide which herbs to grow.

A tip is to take into account your style of cooking because depending on your cuisine your herbal needs will vary. Here are three herbs that have amazing flavors and are the ideal choice if you are just starting out and need a herbs guide.

Basil is a must have in any new herb garden and on top of the list in any herbs guide. Fresh basil is the perfect topping for almost all Italian and Mediterranean dishes. As a general guide, basil is an annual plant; if you decide to plant it outdoors it will last for a season and then it has to be replanted the following year, that’s why some herbs guide suggests that, since it takes basil approximately three months to mature, if you keep three or four pots of basil in continuous rotation, you will be able to have fresh basil all year round. Basil is best grown in small pots on the kitchen windowsill where it is known to keep flies away. In the kitchen basil is used to make delicious pesto ‘genovese’ or to top pasta and pizza.

Any beginner herbs guide has to include sage. This herb grows in the shape of a shrub and can reach around two feet in height. Sage is hearty enough to withstand most Northern Hemisphere winters, however many people will take their sage indoors after the first frost and return it to the garden after the snow melts. Some herbs guide say that some varieties of sage can be grown from seed, but it is easier to grow sage from a cutting. In fact once you have your sage plant, take cuttings from it at least once a year and start a new plant; sage is rather short-lived and you will want a good supply of new plants. A medicinal herbs guide would indicate that sage can be used for headaches and coughs. I use sage mainly in my cooking as it adds a robust flavor to any roast. It can overwhelm other spices, so it is best added at the beginning of the cooking. It also aides the digestion and so is often paired with fatty food like pork.

Parsley is never missing in a beginner herbs guide. It has a germination time of four to six weeks and takes two years to mature (flower) but it is well worth the effort. Parsley does best outdoors and can handle all but the hardest of frosts. As an herbs guide for beginners I would suggest that if you are going to plant your parsley in a pot and leave it indoors, consider putting it near a well-ventilated window or on a porch so that it does not get too hot. In the kitchen, parsley can be added to soups or curries to add both color and flavor and it is used often as a garnish.

Other popular herbs like oregano, tarragon, fennel and coriander are not quite as robust and universal as the other three, but they add unique qualities to your food, teas, and medicine chest and should certainly be part of a beginner herbs guide

There has been a lot of talk going around lately about whether it is really possible to build your own solar panel right in your own home. This is an attention grabbing idea because it seems so far beyond the capabilities of any ordinary person, right? You think of yourself trying to put together a complicated piece of solar powered equipment and immediately think “I’m not a scientist! Are you nuts?”

Well, to be brief: no we are not nuts! You really can build your own solar panel right from your own home, and it will actually work!

Even further, it will save you tons of money. The more solar panels you build and put up on your home, the more money you will save on your electric bill. One panel may not seem like a big deal as it might not make a huge impact if you consume a lot of energy, but you can build more than one and reduce your dependence on the electric company to a huge degree.

You can even build your own solar panel or a series of panels and put them on smaller buildings or sheds on your property so you don’t have to run electricity out to them. You may even be able to make your own solar panel for use in a greenhouse, allowing you to grow your own flowers and vegetables year round.

So, this brings us to the big question: how do you build your own solar panel? And another question you are likely wondering: is it expensive to build your own solar power?

There are also some other kits which just give you directions on how to collect supplies from a local hardware store in order to build your own solar panel, but it is much easier to purchase a kit that already has everything ready for you to assemble right out of the box.

If you are still thinking “I’m not a scientist” rest assured that these kits can be put together by literally anyone who knows how to read or follow directions from DVD instruction. You don’t have to understand exactly how the panels collect sunlight and turn it into real energy for your home or any other type of science behind the panels. You simply have to know how to follow directions and you can make your own solar power right at home.

As for the expense that goes into building your own panels, they are not as expensive as you may think. They are surprisingly affordable, especially when you compare them to the expense of having someone come out to your house and install ready made panels for you. That will cost you thousands of dollars just to have a couple panels installed, but you can build your own for way less.

If you want to build your own solar panel it’s time to step away from the self doubt and trust yourself a little. You are closer to becoming a scientist than you may realize!

The non-green organisms like bacteria and fungi, which are incapable of producing their food, live on the dead decaying plants and animal bodies and are consumers of a special type. These organisms which break down the complex organic compounds present in dead organisms into simpler substances are called decomposers also known as scavengers. A perfect example of decomposers is, earth worms, wasp, cockroaches and flies. Some of the scavengers are microscopic which cannot be seen with our naked eyes such as bacteria. Bacteria are the smallest living organism, and the most numerous of decomposers. This organism can survive in any kind of situation. Fungi on the other hand, a simple including mould and yeast. Fungi as a decomposer is good breaking down thru the hardest substances like wood. The bacteria which act as decomposers are called putrefying bacteria. These organisms act as decomposers by the secretion of there body surfaces which decompose the organic matter present in the dead plants and animals and liberates ammonia carbon dioxide ace. They absorb some of these simpler substances for their own maintenance and release the remaining to the soil, water, and air to be used by the producers again. Producers are organisms which produce their own food, such as plants which produces their own food through photosynthesis.

The decomposers help in decomposing the dead bodies of plants and animals and hence act as cleansing agents of environment. The decomposers also help in putting back of the dead plants back, into the soil air and water for reuse by the producers like crop plants. This maintains the fertility of soil and the soil would continue to support the growth crops again. Thus, the decomposer organism helps in recycling the materials in the biosphere so that the process of life may go on like an unending change.

Thus decomposers protect the environment by giving back its important nutrient for fertilizing the soil for growing crops. In the Indian harvesting system, the farmers decompose the cows dung and use it as natural manure in the crops. The crops grown with this manure are healthy and more notorious than the crops which are sprayed by the chemicals pesticides and chemical manure.

The decomposers which stay in water are star fish and phytoplankton they help in the decomposing of dead animals and dead plants in water. They also help in absorbing the waste chemicals which are dump in the water and polluting the water.
